What is STEM?
STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world applications. My STEM Farm focuses specifically on the food production side of STEM learning.
Why Farming?
We need farmers to grow our grains, fruits and vegetables. We need ranchers to raise cattle, chickens, swine and other valuable sources of protein that are a part of a healthy diet. And we need their decades of experience growing the food, fuel and fiber to ensure our way of life continues. Unfortunately farming as a way of life is declining despite a growing population. By 2050 we will have over 9 billion people on Earth, but less farmland than ever! How will we feed them? Maybe you can help figure that out!
What's in the kit?
The My STEM Farm kit contains everything that you need to get started learning about the technology behind modern farming! The base kit comes with a complex sensor that pairs with our web app to show you exactly what's happening in your farm and how your efforts effect it. The kit will be updated and given expansions over time. The base kit includes:
- WiFi enabled My STEM Farm sensor
- How To Manual
- Interactive work book for your first experiments
- Cricket farming essentials (feed, sponge, trays, bin, egg laying soil)
- Seeds for your smart farm and soil
- Insect bin/seed observation bin

How does the App work?
The My STEM Farm Web App is able to open on any major browser on almost any personal computer or smart phone! It will let you log in and see your experiment in progress. The data updates every few minutes and you can even record notes as you go. Your kit comes with free access for one year and then it's very affordable to keep going after that.
What does the sensor do?
The sensor is your way of looking at the micro climate in your bin! It will read and record many things such as temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. You can use it to change alert setting to tell you if your experiment is getting outside of limits and to see trends over time to compare with your notes. Even better is that it's WiFi enabled meaning that you can check the sensor data from anywhere in the world as long as it has a good WiFi connection. Change your setting... change the outcome of your farm!
Wait... What's this about bugs?
No, that's not a typo! You can eat bugs! In fact, My STEM Farm comes with instructions on how to raise your own crickets and the materials to start a micro cricket farm. Why? Because 2/3 of the world's population already eats insects and they are a sustainable source of nutrition. Want to learn even more? Check out this page!
